The “Movements of the Earth” and the “Phases of the Moon” Apollo and Artemis
There is, in the way humanity names its grand projects, a form of allegorical memory that refuses to fade. The Apollo program was not merely a technological demonstration; it was an invocation of order, light, and reason amid the epic tensions of the Cold War. Today, Artemis brings onto the stage not another god, but a sister – a possible correction to “solarian” excesses. Artemis embodies rhythm, cyclicality, a return that is less triumphalist and more contemplative. NASA itself speaks, in recent communications, of “sustainable exploration,” suggesting that the epic is no longer about “reaching” the Moon, but about “settling” upon it. Myth does not disappear, it refines itself: from heroic gesture to ecosystemic one. In this sense, naming no longer legitimizes ambition alone, but responsibility as well – an ethics of human presence beyond Earth, in which mythological symbolism functions as a cultural compass within an increasingly “abstractly-technological” universe.
Half a century of “lunar silence” is not a hiatus, but a change in breathing. After Apollo 11 Moon landing marked a peak through its message, the world descended from the fever of vertical conquest into the commercialism of low Earth orbit. Space journalists note, in their analyses of Artemis, that the absence of an existential competition comparable to that between the United States and the Soviet Union during the first Moon landing has relegated the night’s celestial body to a secondary object. Moreover, colossal costs and legal ambiguities surrounding extraterrestrial resource exploitation have suspended ambition in the realm of the possible, yet non-urgent. It may have been merely the “New Moon” phase of exploration: present, but invisible, patiently cultivating the premises of return. Meanwhile, orbital infrastructure – satellites, stations, probes – has reshaped our relationship with outer space, transforming it from a symbolic frontier into pragmatic infrastructure.
In this context, Artemis II is not merely a mission, but a testimonial: the first human flight around the Moon since 1972, a gesture that resumes the interrupted thread of history, though with a slowness that seems almost unnatural – considering that even a mobile phone from a decade ago possessed more computing power than the entire system that carried Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins to and from Earth’s natural satellite. Yet unlike Apollo, Artemis does not settle for the moment; it prepares duration. The emphasis is no longer on simply returning humans to the Moon, but on constructing an architecture: the Gateway orbital station, future bases, logistical routes. In this shift, adventuring turns into habitual-and-habitable. Humanity is no longer merely a guest, but a potential host of a space that, until yesterday, was only a backdrop. Moreover, Artemis introduces a dimension of inclusiveness – the “cosmic hero” is no longer exclusively male.
This return unfolds in a world where the sky no longer belongs to a single rivalry. China projects its own lunar station, India asserts its capabilities through recent missions, as does the European Union, while discourse about a “New Space Race” resurfaces in the global press. Unlike the twentieth century, however, there is no longer a clear frontline, but rather a network of intersecting ambitions. The Artemis odyssey also serves as a diplomatic instrument through the Artemis Accords, attempting to establish informal rules of the game. Thus, outer space becomes a domain of continuous negotiation, where competition and cooperation coexist like successive lunar phases. In this landscape, power is no longer merely technological, but increasingly normative: those who define the rules of access and use of space implicitly define the future cosmic order – one that will need to accommodate, lucidly and realistically, principles of global governance, all adjusted with the “astro-” prefix.
Beyond symbolism, the Moon begins to acquire geo-/astro-/politico-economic substance. In contemporary language, it is no longer merely a celestial body, but a scarce/valuable resource: a potential repository of minerals, an energy platform, a launching point for deeper exploration. Recent literature on the space economy highlights the expansion of this field beyond major corporations and states toward a broader network of actors, including SMEs and NGOs. NASA itself promotes economic partnerships, and speaking of the Moon’s “commerciality” no longer seems exotic. Selene’s luminary is also passing through market phases: from exploration to exploitation, from symbol to capital, prompting a reexamination of sovereignty and property rights institutions. Just as the movements of the Earth are not merely rotations and revolutions, neither are the phases of the Moon mere plays of light: today, they are the rhythms of a humanity negotiating its space between power and market.
