Coaching the Business Game

Coaching the Business Game

There is a set of conventional attitudes and customs that employees from business environment try to focus on in daily work in order to achieve results. Either they are members of top management or entry-level positions, business comrades are guiding themselves (more or less) by the following principles.

  1. Know how to prioritize. It is somehow similar to life plans, when people sneak to their life with a short-term eye or through a long-term binocular. The challenging part is that in doing business the prioritizing process is done daily, in order to be sure that one will deliver maximum contribution each day by addressing the hottest projects. On top of that, the daily plan of priorities may suffer disruptions as unexpected is the unasked guest that expresses his taught. Annoyingly sometimes, unexpected matters become critical, taking by force the leading position in the hierarchy of priorities. Anyhow, if one does not prioritize his activities correctly, he may not bring his best contribution to the firm's results.
  2. Learn to manage time effectively. Time-management is a key influencer of daily work. It is strongly related to the prioritization process, as making the list with priorities is the first step towards a good management of time. Without it, employees may use their time focusing on the wrong activities, this leading to an incorrect usage of time slots within the day.
  3. Prioritization and good time-management are pinning to the last point of this triad: organization. It may seem easy as pie to organize your stuff when being part of a complex business environment, which is itself very strict and organized. As business involves an entanglement of actions and projects (some related, others dissimilar) a good organization of the entire day is crucial. And old school is sometimes the good school, so pen and paper could make sense better than clicks and screens.
  4. Team-work. It is indeed about team-work. Working in a business environment is being a piece of the game. And games do not play by themselves: you are part of a team, you have colleagues and you have opponents. And more important, you have to follow the player's instructions. A company is like a football team: members from one department are colleagues, playing on the same position. All the departments represent the team: players on the field and substitutes. So trying to take the ball and score by yourself is definitely not recommended if you want to catch the next match.
  5. Know to follow your own goals too. Team targets are definitely the end of the season. Anyway, during each match every player must keep in mind his/her own target, which contribute to personal success and performance. In any football team players work together to win, but each is paid and seen according to personal contribution and performance.
  6. Have initiative. In business, everyone loves people that follow the orders, but no one likes people that constantly receive and execute. Initiative is appreciated, ideas and personal view are awarded. Coming up with new concepts and visions towards the business is a way of personal development and of pushing one's limits.
  7. Have the power to challenge. Not all the decisions are correct, even though they come from the bosses or from people with years of experience. Business is a game whose rules and components are changing daily. Sticking to a pattern is definitely an inside constraint. Challenging others means that you think, too, and not just execute as a robot. The challenge may be wrong, but the employee's image in colleagues' eyes will not be affected. On the contrary, they will be aware of the fact that the challenger is there and his mind is rational, focused on analyzing and finding a better way.
  8. Know yourself and know the others. People usually act and communicate by their own way. When working in an organization this is not entirely effective. Knowing the way of being of each colleague can ease the communication process. Adapting the message to each person based on their attitude and behavior will facilitate a better understanding and working process together. On the other hand each individual has to know himself/herself. That is how they will be able to informally explain the other team members how they are used to do daily work.
  9. Give and ask for feedback. Feedback will help employees to better work together. Giving and asking for feedback will facilitate the know yourself and know others process. Accepting your image as it is seen from outside is the starting point in trying to be a better you. Offer feedback and help others to be better so you can all work easier and achieve a higher performance.
  10. Be hungry. Be hungry with your competitors, be hungry with yourself.
