The Year of Tolerance The UAE on its 48th anniversary
My country, the United Arab Emirates, recently celebrated its National Day, marking the celebration of the 48th anniversary of its founding. The UAE strides forward with wisdom and perseverance, under the leadership of the President, HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his brothers their highnesses the members of the Federal Supreme Council, Rulers of the emirates, and following in the footsteps of its founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Through the hands of its loyal daughters and sons, the United Arab Emirates concentrates on pillars of the country’s growth and development, attaining developmental, cultural, economic, political and social achievements.
On this national occasion, the 48th National Day of the UAE, I extended my warmest congratulations and wishes to His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to their brothers in the Supreme Council of Rulers of the UAE and to the Government and people of the UAE.
The UAE's 48th National Day celebrations coincide with the proclamation of 2019 as the “Year of Tolerance” in the UAE by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, which highlights the UAE as a global capital of tolerance, manifested in the form of its various legislative and policy-oriented goals, which aim at enhancing the role of the country in instilling the values of co-existence and peace in local, regional and international communities.
The UAE now leads in several regional and global indicators on gender equality and women’s achievements, education and literacy, and female employment, and also ranks first in the world for “treating women with respect” according to the Social Progress Index, among many other indicators.
In this context, the visit of His Holiness Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City, to Abu Dhabi this year, which coincided with the visit of Sheikh Al-Azhar, Grand Imam Ahmad Al-Tayeb, is considered the fruitful result of the three decades of efforts the UAE dedicated to the purpose of promoting the values of moderation, peace and religious pluralism.
The UAE is proud to host Expo 2020 Dubai, the world's first event to highlight the creativity and achievements of humankind. It will welcome more than 200 participants from countries, companies, organizations and educational institutions, highlighting the country's ability to gather the world under one roof.
The organization of the Expo 2020 Dubai, under the theme of “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”, aims at building a purposeful legacy of tolerance and at educating young people to bear a spirit of tolerance and inclusiveness, as the decision to invite all countries to this event, without exception, comes in line with the efforts of the United Arab Emirates and its values which serve to promote peaceful coexistence not only between communities inside the country, but also abroad.
In the field of foreign investment and talent attraction, the UAE Cabinet approved a resolution granting foreign investors ownership of up to 100% in 13 different economic sectors. A new system of visas introduced provides investors and their families with long-term visas of up to 10 years. In addition, residence visas of up to 10 years have also been granted for specialized competencies in the fields of medicine, science, research and technology, as well as for scientists and innovators.
We have succeeded in presenting a role model of stability and tolerance in the region. This success comes from the centrality of the UAE’s approach, from the moderation of its foreign policy and its openness to the world, and continues to be based on the constants of strengthening international peace and security, respect for others, stimulating development and prosperity and combating extremism and terrorism. The year 2019 witnessed a new historic achievement reached by the UAE with its entry into the space sector, which will be added to the UAE record of qualitative achievements. With the launch of the first Emirati astronaut to the International Space Station, the UAE is moving to a new phase in its leadership path, thanks to the wise vision of its leadership. UAE astronaut Hazza Al Mansouri has participated in 16 scientific experiments in cooperation with his colleagues from the International space agencies from Russia and the United States, and this achievement comes within the program of “Emirates Astronaut Program”, which is the first program in the Arab region to prepare national cadres participating in spaceflights, and to help in improving human life on Earth. In addition to this, the UAE has successfully launched several space satellites in various fields, and these satellites were entirely produced in UAE, which indicates the UAE's interest in the space sector and its relentless pursuit of excellence in this field.
I also took the opportunity to congratulate my country, the United Arab Emirates, and Romania on the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. These relations were characterized by friendship, transparency and care for mutual interests, which resulted in the signing of the strategic partnership document in the economic field, that further contributed to increase of UAE investments in Romania, as well as to the increase of Romanian investments in the UAE. During the past two years, the UAE-Romania relations have developed considerably under the auspices and guidance of the leaderships of the two countries. There have been many official visits from the two sides, and we saw the organization of the High-Level UAE-Romania Joint Committee, which opens a new era towards strengthening bilateral relations in all areas of common interest. We are looking forward to continuing this fruitful cooperation with the Romanian Government, which will be for the benefit of the two countries, for many years to come.
